Reviews

Reviewer: George H. Williams

This handbook is a collection of material by 17 people in 21 chapters. The editors have selected authors who have had an early and continuing involvement in software quality. The chapters are grouped into three sections: fundamental concepts and historical discussion; quality techniques, with emphasis on the Software Engineering Institutes Capability Maturity Model for software; and software quality assurance applications for mission-critical and commercial software. Many examples discussed in the handbook are from the authors experiences in large software projects for military and government use. The chapter titles are Software Quality Assurance—Coming to Terms How Does Software Quality Assurance Fit In Software Quality Lessons from the Quality Experts Standardization of Software Quality Assurance— Where Is It All Going Software Quality Program Organization Personnel Requirements to Make Software Quality Assurance Work American Society for Quality (ASQ) Software Quality Engineer Certification Program The Cost of Software Quality Inspections as an Up-Front Quality Technique Software Configuration Management—A Practical Look The Pareto Principle Applied to Software Quality Assurance Understanding the Capability Maturity Model (CMMSM) and the Role of SQA in Software Development Maturity SEI CMMSM Level 5: Boeing Space Transportation Systems Software Software Quality Assurance CASE Tools Software Quality Assurance Metrics Practical Applications of Software Quality Assurance to Mission-Critical Software Practical Applications of Software Quality Assurance to Commercial Software Effective Methods of Information Services Quality Assurance Statistical Methods Applied to Software Quality Control Software Reliability Management Software Safety and Its Relation to Software Quality Assurance The book includes extensive reference lists so the reader can pursue software quality issues in other contexts. The text is well edited and brings information together into a cohesive package. The value of this book resides in the multiple viewpoints on software quality assurance and the references to sources that can provide depth in particular areas.
