Farm and ranch FAQ

Expand all What is farm and ranch insurance?

Farm and ranch insurance, or agricultural insurance, helps protect you and your business, whether you have a commercial operation, a family farm or ranch, or an estate farm.

What does a farm and ranch insurance policy cover?

It includes property coverage for farm dwellings and structures, household furnishings and scheduled farm equipment, such as tractors. It provides liability coverage for injury and damage to others and may help cover legal fees for farming activities on estate or hobby farms, regardless of fault. If you have cattle, livestock or horses, or you grow crops, you may need farm and ranch insurance.

How much is farm and ranch insurance?

Every operation is different and has different coverage needs. A policy for a hobby farm likely costs much less than a policy for a commercial grower and packer. You can tailor your policy to your needs, however small or large. Call Travelers at 866-678-0494 for a quote.

Will my homeowners policy cover my estate farm or hobby farm?

Your standard homeowners policy won't cover many things found on estate and hobby farms, such as vineyards, buildings, equipment, livestock and horses. It also may not cover legal fees for farming activities.

Do I need a farm and ranch policy for a few chickens or 4H animals?

Because the risk is minimal, a farm and ranch policy for these activities is affordable while still providing liability coverage. This includes animal escape, product coverages and on-premise public exposure. Coverage is available for hobby farms with small poultry and egg sales operations.

Do I need agricultural insurance if I lease or rent my property for farm and ranch operations?

Yes. Even if you don't do any farming yourself, a farm and ranch policy helps protect you from liability exposure, especially if the renter is injured on your property.

Hobby Farms

Hobby farms normally include one or two moderately valued dwellings occupied by the insured and family. They may have other outbuildings as well as farm and ranch equipment. Hobby farms can include a number of activities, such as growing fruits, vegetables, grains or other crops. Owners may raise chickens, sheep, goats, alpacas, cattle or other livestock. A farm and ranch policy could also include liability and product coverage for operations. Any boarding or training of horses that generates income requires a separate equine coverage.

Estate Farms

An agribusiness policy can help protect private estate farms that include one or more high-value dwellings. They may have other outbuildings as well as farm and ranch equipment. Liability coverage includes injuries from animals and livestock. This policy also covers ATV, snowmobile and hunting exposures that are common on these types of estates.
